Common Sense never entered the building. It pulled up, saw the barricades, heard Trump testing material inside, and told the driver, “Keep moving. This feels contagious.”

Go back and watch a few minutes of that dinner. Not the whole thing — I’m not trying to kill you. Just enough to see a room full of journalists and political operatives in borrowed-looking expensive clothes, sitting there while the President delivers jokes that wandered in without identification. No beginning. No ending. A few of them looked like they’d escaped from an assisted-living facility for abandoned sentences. He’d pause for laughter, get the kind of silence usually reserved for funerals, and then explain that the joke was funny — which, if you didn’t know, is always how you can tell comedy’s going great. Nothing saves a joke like an emergency autopsy performed by the person who just killed it.

And I need y’all to sit with the room’s face for a second. Nobody knew whether to laugh, clap, pray, or quietly call an adult. That’s the exact expression America’s been wearing for a decade now:

What the fuck is happening?

Good. Hold onto that face. You’ll need it for the rest of this.

Because while we’ve been staging the spectacle — the dinners, the feuds, the rallies, the hats, men congratulating themselves behind podiums — another country’s apparently been over here studying the psychology of silence.

China.

And before anybody starts hyperventilating into a flag: I remember Tiananmen. I know about the censorship, the surveillance, the spotless Shanghai skyline that conveniently doesn’t show you what’s happening two streets over. The internet is a window. It is not a passport. Until I’m actually there, walking the streets, accidentally ordering something with a foot in it, I reserve the right to stay suspicious.

But suspicious doesn’t mean blind.

China moves like a dark psychologist — quiet, patient, letting the loudest person in the room hand over every insecurity for free. And America talks so much an enemy wouldn’t even need spies. Just turn on cable news. We announce our fears, televise our divisions, hold hearings to explain our own dysfunction on the record, and then upload the whole thing to YouTube in HD like we’re proud of it.

China doesn’t explain itself to us. Doesn’t need our approval. It’s not firing shots — it’s taking positions. A port here. A battery plant there. A solar contract somewhere else. An EV market slipped quietly into its pocket while we’re still arguing about whether driving electric makes a man less of one.

Picture the difference like this: America’s the guy who pulls up to the club in a rented Lamborghini, revving it in the valet line so everybody clocks his arrival. China’s the quiet one in the back booth who owns the club, the garage, the company that made the Lambo’s battery — and maybe the note on the loud guy’s house.

Nobody saw him come in.

That was the whole point.

Noise wants attention. Silence wants ownership. And it’s working — Pew survey data shows people in many countries now view China more favorably than the United States, including some of our own neighbors. That doesn’t mean they trust China. That would be too easy. It means we’ve been so unstable that China doesn’t need to look good anymore — it just needs to look calmer.

Sit with the size of that. An authoritarian state with a surveillance apparatus and enough red flags to reupholster a hotel — and the review is: “I don’t know, the quiet one seems more stable.” That’s not China winning a beauty pageant. That’s America showing up drunk and yelling at the judges.

Meanwhile we turned electric vehicles into a referendum on masculinity, and China turned them into an industry. We were asking if batteries were woke. China was making the batteries. We were producing podcasts. China was producing cars. We put a sticker on the gas pump. China positioned itself across the whole supply chain.

Common Sense missed another meeting.

Even the receipts are quiet. Pakistani households and businesses have imported large volumes of cheap Chinese solar panels to cope with high electricity prices and an unreliable grid. No tanks, no speeches, no flag in the yard. Just a family’s lights staying on and remembering exactly who sold them the panel. Dark psychology with a warranty.

Same story with the allies. Spain has been deepening economic and diplomatic ties with China and courting Chinese investment, while Germany is trying to recalibrate more cautiously — not becoming Chinese, just becoming practical. They’re looking at the board and realizing we keep walking in with a flamethrower demanding everyone pick a side, and China keeps walking in with a contract.

One of us makes a scene. One of us makes an option. People like options.

Now — the lights. Because from a distance America still shines. Times Square. The White House. Wall Street. Flyovers, flags big enough to cover the wound underneath them. We’re basically a Vegas resort: lit up from orbit, marble in the lobby, fountains out front, and — this part’s not an accident — not a single clock on the casino floor, because management doesn’t want you noticing how long you’ve been losing.

The lights are real. The building is real. What you don’t get shown is the back of house — the leaking pipes, the unpaid staff, a man named Randy holding the whole electrical grid together with duct tape and prayer. We get the podium, not the panic. The fighter jets, not the invoice. The stock market, not the woman splitting her pills in half to make the bottle last. The flags, not the classroom running a GoFundMe for pencils.

We get shown the wealthiest country on earth. We are, gently, discouraged from asking where the wealth went.

And then we’re told leaving is unthinkable. Why would you? Look at the lights. Look at the freedom. Look at this enormous television.

Sure. The television’s incredible.

The ceiling above it’s on fire.

That’s the whole reason this newsletter exists. Escaping the L’Orange Era was never just about escaping one orange man — men leave office eventually. The spectacle doesn’t. It just auditions a replacement. What I’m actually trying to escape is the machine that produced him in the first place: the addiction to noise, to celebrity, to branding, to men who think volume is a substitute for evidence. I want to know what’s on the other side of a country that keeps mistaking being seen for being valuable.

Beyond the press dinners. Beyond the nightly rerun of Democracy Is Doing Fine, Please Ignore the Smoke.

I want to know if the trains run on time somewhere else. If the doctor actually shows up. If the food’s safe. If a person can live a whole life without selling an organ or starting a podcast to cover the difference.

I want to know what’s real once the promo video stops playing.

China might not be the answer. China is the warning. It’s what happens when a powerful country gets so busy admiring its own reflection that it stops noticing who’s already inside, measuring the curtains.

Silence is behind us, buying the building.

But go ahead — keep watching the dinner.

The President’s got another joke he’d like to explain.

Common Sense remains unavailable for comment.

I’m out.

© Kimberly Ann Hawes founder of The Daily Fuckcabulary & Just Zen The Fuck Out

Subscribe now

TODAY’S WORD IS…FUCKHAT

In this bizarre episode, Angela needed a refund.

ESCAPING THE L’ORANGE ERA

In this bizarre episode, Angela needed a refund. Then she stepped outside.

One single step onto that porch and the humidity looked at her hairline like "oh, you thought."
By the time she got to the car, her edges were no longer edges. He kind of… slid off the screen. One minute he’s freezing mid‑sentence on live TV like somebody unplugged his router, and the next minute it’s like the whole country quietly agreed, “We’re done looking at that. Next.” No finale. No recap episode. Just vibes.

And then — out of nowhere — we get the picture.

“Look, here’s Mitch.” And I’m sorry, but the photo does not say “elder statesman enjoying retirement.” The photo says, “A Muppet escaped hair and makeup.” He looks like a political garden gnome who wandered out of a South Park episode about underpants theft. Tiny man. Massive paperwork trail. Whole era of fallout just standing behind him like, “Hey, remember us?”

Now hold up.

The real story isn’t “where is Mitch.” The real story is “why did we all accept that Mitch could just shuffle off into the background with no emotional severance package for the damage?” He leaves the frame; we stay in the fine print. That’s the part that has me squinting.

And then, as if that’s not strange enough, I wake up and hear: “He just blew up.”

I’m thinking, “Excuse me? What blew up? A building? A pipeline? Did the stock market combust overnight?” No. We’re talking about Lindsey Graham’s heart. Or, more specifically, about how Donald Trump chose to describe Lindsey Graham’s heart.

Trump basically says: we’ve had great doctors, they told us a part of Lindsey’s body literally blew up, his father died young from heart issues, Lindsey had serious artery problems, seventy‑percent blockage, all of that.

Here’s where it gets funky.

On the surface, that sounds insane. It sounds like something you say because you watched one medical drama and now you think you’re a cardiologist. But if you listen to what the actual doctors said, they’re not far off in imagery. Lindsey died of an aortic dissection — a tear in the big artery coming off the heart — and the surgeon explaining it said, “It’s basically like your heart exploding.”

So medically, we’re in the same neighborhood. The doctor says, “Think of it like the heart exploding.” Trump says, “A part of his body literally blew up.” Different language, same mental picture.

The difference is in the tone. The doctor is trying to explain a catastrophic medical event. Trump sounds like he’s reading stage directions.

That’s the part I can’t let go.

You have a man who spent decades inside the machine — voting, blocking, approving, helping build the era we’re trying to escape — and when he dies, his most famous friend describes it like a special effect: “Great guy, great guy… anyway, boom.” It’s casual. It’s almost playful. It’s politically loyal in the shallow way, but emotionally detached in the way that tells you everything about the job.

So let’s break this down.

Mitch quietly disappears, like a Waldo you stop looking for.

Lindsey’s heart tears open, and the explanation you hear on TV is “literally blew up,” said with the same energy as “the toaster caught fire.”

The policies, judges, and fallout from both of them remain fully intact.

That combination — cartoon exit, explosive heart, zero real reckoning — is the American vibe in this era. It’s not just L’Orange; it’s the whole color palette. The people writing the script talk about human lives like plot points. The audience gets numb. And the rest of us are left living inside the episodes long after they’ve moved on to the next storyline.

Which is why I keep saying: escaping the L’Orange era is not just about visas and plane tickets. It’s also about emotional distance. It’s about looking at this level of casualness around power and death and saying, “Yeah, I need a different environment. I need out of this writer’s room.”

You’re allowed to laugh — because some of this is objectively ridiculous. You’re allowed to say Mitch looks like a gnome and that “blew up” is the wildest way to talk about aortic dissection you’ve ever heard. But you’re also allowed to let that laugh turn into a decision.

A decision to stop acting like these people are the only adults in the room.

A decision to start treating your own life and your own heart like they deserve better writers.

A decision to put real effort into building the money, the plan, and the options that get you off this set.

Mitch found. One minute he was freezing mid‑sentence on live TV like somebody unplugged his router, and the next minute it was like the whole country quietly agreed to stop asking questions. No farewell tour, no real reckoning, just a slow fade to “Oh yeah, him. Whatever happened with that?”

It feels a lot like those “Where’s Waldo?” books we grew up with. Except the joke here is: did we ever actually find Waldo, or did we just get tired, close the book, and move on? Mitch pulled a political Waldo—only instead of hiding in a crowd of red‑and‑white stripes, he disappeared into a crowd of cowards, consultants, and colleagues who were more than happy to let him slip into the background so nobody had to explain how we got here in the first place.

Because let’s be honest: if a long‑time Senate leader can vanish from the national conversation and it barely registers, what does that say? Either he was always more useful than meaningful, or the system is so numb that even the disappearance of a main character barely moves the needle. The media doesn’t do a “Where is Mitch now?” special; they just move on to the next chaos headline. No closure, no accountability—just vibes.

The wild part is how normal it feels. We watched this man help engineer decades of judicial and political mess, and now that he’s no longer convenient, he’s treated like an expired coupon: “Oh, that’s old. Throw it away.” No one’s asking, “What did all those{ decisions cost us?” They’re too busy pretending the machine will run just fine if we quietly erase the people who built it.

So maybe the real question isn’t “Where is Mitch?” It’s: why do we keep letting these folks vanish without a final report? Why do we let them slip out the side door with lifetime power, lifetime benefits, and zero emotional severance for the damage they did to everybody else’s life?

“Where’s Mitch?” might end up being the most American question of all: not because we can’t find him, but because we’re realizing it never mattered where he was. The policies, the judges, the fallout—they’re still here. Mitch is just off‑screen now, somewhere comfortable, while the rest of us are stuck living inside the fine print he left.

©️Kimberly creator of <a The one where everyone's wearing beige and laughing about spreadsheets.

He ordered an oat milk, half-caf, double-shot, extra-dry Fuckuccino with a dusting of cinnamon and a whisper of vanilla. A whisper. He said "whisper" to a barista making $12 an hour who definitely wrote his order on the cup as "difficult man, 7:42 AM."
He sat in the window seat with his laptop open to a blank document, because that's what people in coffee shops do. They don't work. They vibe. He took a picture of the leaf they drew in the foam and posted it with a caption about "small joys" and "being present." Present. He's present in the same way a ghost is present.

Then he checked his phone. Text from his boss — "Need you in early, big meeting" — and suddenly that Fuckuccino wasn't a lifestyle. It was a liability.
